Requirements and Procedures for Chinese Visa Application

The latest visa application requirements of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Brunei Darussalam are updated as follows:

1.Those who do not need to apply for visa

(1) Foreigners who are applicable to various mutual visa exemption agreements;

(2) Foreigners holding valid Chinese permanent residence permits; 

(3) Foreigners holding various types of valid Chinese residence permits;

(4) Foreigners holding a valid APEC business travel card(including APEC Virtual Cards);

(5) 24-hour transit visa-free personnel.

Note: For inquiries about 72-hour and 144-hour transit visa-free policy, please consult the Exit-Entry Border Inspection Authorities at the place of entry.

2. The Unilateral Visa-free Entry Policy to Bruneian Citizens

    Bruneian ordinary passport holders, who travel to China for business, tourism, visiting and transit within 15 days are exempted from applying for visa.


3. Application Procedures

(1) Online Application

Applicants need to fill out the visa application form online (https://cova.cs.mfa.gov.cn). Confirmation page and full form (8 pages in total) must be printed with signature on the confirmation page and item 9 of the form. Please check the information one by one on the application form carefully to avoid the forms being returned and filled out again after arriving at the Embassy. All applicants are required to complete the online application form at least one working day prior to visiting the Consular Section for visa application processing.

(2)  Submit application documents to the Consular Office

Please be noted that applicants are required to come to the Consular Office of the Embassy of China in Brunei Darussalam in person for biometric data collection. The following applicants can be exempted from fingerprint collection: 

1. Applicants under the age of 14 or over 70;

2. Applicants holding diplomatic, or who are eligible for diplomatic,offical and courtesy visas;

3. Applicants who already had their fingerprints collected within the past five years at the Chinese Embassy in the Brunei Darussalam with the same passport;

4. Applicants who suffer from 10 fingers mutilation or whose fingerprints cannot be collected.

The application for exemption from fingerprinting can be submitted by an agent (no power of attorney is required).


4. Visa application documents

(1) Basic documents for visa application:

1. Original passport with at least six months of remaining validity and blank visa pages, and a photocopy of the passport's information page.

2. Completed visa application form and the confirmation page with signatures.

3.Proof of legal stay or residence status (applicable to non-Bruneian citizen). The original and a photocopy of valid Brunei visa or other proof of legal stay, residence, employment or study in Brunei.

4.Original copy of previous Chinese passport or original copy of previous visas to Mainland China (applicable to those who were Chinese citizens and have obtained foreign citizenship). If you are applying for a visa to Mainland China for the first time, you should provide the original copy of your previous Chinese passport and a photocopy of its data page. If you have obtained visas to Mainland China before and want to apply for a Chinese visa with a renewed foreign passport, you should present the original copy of your foreign passport's data page as well as a photocopy of the previous Chinese visa. (If your name on the current passport differs from that on the previous one, you must provide an official document of name change.)

5.One recent ID photo (within 6 months), front view, color photo with white background, in 48mm x 33mm size.

Issued to foreign crew members of means of international transportation, including aircraft, trains and ships, or motor vehicle drivers engaged in cross-border transport activities, or to the accompanying family members of the crew members of the above-mentioned ships.

A letter of guarantee issued by a foreign transport company or an invitation letter issued by a relevant entity in China

D

Issued to those who intend to reside in China permanently.

The original and photocopy of the Confirmation Form for Foreigners Permanent Residence Status issued by the Ministry of Public Security of China.

F

Issued to those who intend to go to China for exchanges, visits, study tours and other activities.

An invitation letter issued by a relevant entity or individual in China. 

G

Issued to those who intend to transit through China.

An onward air (train or ship) ticket with confirmed date and seat to the destination country or region.

L

Issued to those who intend to go to China as a tourist.

One of the following documents:

(1) Documents showing the itinerary including air ticket booking record (round trip) and proof of a hotel reservation, etc.

(2)An invitation letter issued by a relevant entity or individual in China. For invitation from an individual, photocopy of Chinese ID or foreign passport and permanent residence permit of the inviting individual is needed.

M

Issued to those who intend to go to China for commercial and trade activities.

Documents on the commercial activity issued by a trade partner in China, or trade fair invitation or other invitation letters issued by relevant entity or individual.

Q1

Issued to those who are family members of Chinese citizens or of foreigners with Chinese permanent residence and intend to go to China for family reunion, or to those who intend to go to China for the purpose of foster care. The intended duration of stay in China exceeds 180 days.

"Family members" refers to spouses, parents, sons, daughters, spouses of sons or daughters, brothers, sisters, grandparents, grandsons, granddaughters and parents-in-law.

(1) An invitation letter issued by a Chinese citizen or a foreign citizen with a Chinese permanent residence permit who lives in China.

(2) Photocopy of Chinese ID of the inviting individual or foreign passport and permanent residence permit.

(3) Original and photocopy of certification (marriage certificate, birth certificate, certification of kinship issued by Public Security Bureau or notarized certification of kinship) showing the relationship of family members between applicant and inviting individual.

Q2

Issued to those who intend to visit their relatives who are Chinese citizens residing in China or foreigners with permanent residence in China. The intended duration of stay in China is no more than 180 days.

(1) An invitation letter issued by a Chinese citizen or a foreign citizen with a Chinese permanent residence permit who lives in China.

(2) Photocopy of Chinese ID or foreign passport and permanent residence permit of the inviting individual

R

Issued to those who are high-level talents or whose skills are urgently needed in China.

The applicant should submit relevant certification in accordance with relevant regulations, and meet the relevant requirements of the competent authorities of the Chinese government on high-level talents and individual with special skills urgently needed by China

S1

Issued to those who intend to go to China to visit the foreigners working or studying in China to whom they are spouses, parents, sons or daughters under the age of 18 or parents-in-law, or to those who intend to go to China for other private affairs. The intended duration of stay in China exceeds 180 days.

(1) An invitation letter from the inviting individual (a foreigner who stays or resides in China for work or studies)

(2) A photocopy of the inviting individual's passport and residence permit

(3) Original and photocopy of certification (marriage certificate, birth certificate, certification of kinship issued by Public Security Bureau or notarized certification of kinship) showing the relationship of immediate family members between applicants and inviting individual.

S2

Issued to those who intend to visit their family members who are foreigners working or studying in China, or to those who intend to go to China for other private matters. The intended duration of stay in China is no more than 180 days.

(1) An invitation letter issued by the inviting individual (a foreigner who stays or resides in China for work or studies)

(2) A photocopy of the inviting individual's (a foreigner who stays or lives in China for work or studies) passport and residence permit

(3) Photocopy of certification (marriage certificate, birth certificate or notarized certification of kinship) showing the relationship of family members between the applicant and the inviting individual.

X1

Issued to those who intend to study in China for a period of more than 180 days.

(1) Original and photocopy of the Admission Letter issued by a school or other entities in China.

(2) Original and photocopy of "Visa Application for Study in China" (Form JW201 or Form JW202).

X2

Issued to those who intend to study in China for a period of no more than 180 days.

Original and photocopy of Admission Notice issued by a school or other entities in China.

Z

Issued to those who intend to work in China.

One of the following documents:

(1) The "Notification Letter of Foreigner's Work Permit" issued by the Foreign Experts Bureau or the original "Foreigner's Work Permit";

(2) "Invitation Letter for Foreigners Engaged in Offshore Oil Operation in the People's Republic of China" issued by China National Offshore Oil Corporation;

(3) The "Registration Certificate of Foreign Enterprises Permanent Offices in China" issued by the Administration Department for Industry and Commerce, or the "Certificate of Approval of Permanent Representatives of Foreign Enterprises" issued by the Commercial Department;

(4) The Confirmation Letter on the Qualification of the Representative of the Permanent Representative Office of the Foreign Government Tourism Department issued by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism;

(5) The original copy of the commercial performance approval document issued by the competent cultural authority (if the performance period does not exceed 90 days, the "Notification Letter of Foreigner's Work Permit" must also be provided).

We kindly remind you that:

1.The invitation letter may be in the form of fax, photocopy or computer printout. If necessary, the consular officer may require the applicant to submit the original invitation letter.

The invitation letter should contain:

(1) Information on the applicant (full name, gender, date of birth, etc.)

(2) Information on the planned visit (purpose of visit, arrival and departure dates, place(s) to be visited, relations between the applicant and the inviting entity or individual, financial source for expenditures)

(3) Information on the inviting entity or individual (name, contact telephone number, address, official stamp, signature of the legal representative or the inviting individual)

2.If necessary, the consular officer may require the applicant to provide other proof documents or supplementary materials, or require an interview with the applicant.

3.The consular officer will decide on whether or not to issue the visa and on its validity, duration of stay and number of entries in light of specific conditions of the applicant.

7. J1/J2 visa application is subject to the requirements of the competent authorities.

8. For emergency humanitarian visas, such as going to China for funerals or visiting critically ill relatives, applicants must submit the identity documents of the deceased or sick relatives (such as foreign passports, etc.), death certificates or medical certificates issued by hospitals, critical illness notifications, certification of kinship and other materials showing the relationship between applicant and inviting individual.

9. If you have obtained a Chinese visa before, you must provide a copy of the Chinese visa you have obtained. If the visa is on the old passport, the old passport is also required.

5.Other Application Matters 

(1) Special Reminder

1. Please fill out and check your personal information in the application form carefully. Either incorrect key information such as wrong name, gender, date of birth, passport number, passport issuing country etc., or misuse of a photo that does not belong to the applicant, intentional concealment of key information in the application form may result in the returning of your application, and bring possible inconvenience to the applicant. In that case, the applicant needs to fill out the "Visa Application Form" online again.  

2.Temporary visitors to Brunei should apply for Chinese visas from the Chinese Embassy/Consulate in the countries in which they live. In special cases, the consular officers will decide whether to issue visas on a case-by-case basis. You also need to submit a photocopy of the Brunei visa/immigration entry stamp on your passport.

(2) Visa Fees

To further facilitate the personnel exchangebetweenChina and foreigncountries, the Chinese Embassy in Brunei will lower the visa fees to 75% of the original rates starting from December 11th, 2023, to December 31st, 2024.The new visa fees will be as follows:

According to bilateral agreements, the fees for citizens of some countries applying for Chinese visas may vary, please refer to the embassy's specific explanations.

(3)Processing Time 

1.Normal service (4 working days, including the day of submitting application).

2.Express service (3 working days), additional BND34 express fee.

3.Urgent service (2 working days), additional BND50 urgent fee.
