The Chinese Embassy Held Reception Marking the 88th Anniversary of the Founding of the PLA

On the evening of July 31, H.E. Mdm Yang Jian, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China, and Senior Colonel Cheng Shaoying, Defence Attaché of the Chinese Embassy, jointly held a reception in Bandar Seri Begawan to celebrate the 88th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA). YM Dato Paduka Haji Mustappa bin Haji Sirat, Deputy Minister of Defence of Brunei Darussalam, graced the reception as the Guest of Honor. Over 200 guests attended the reception, including officials from Ministry of Defence, Royal Brunei Armed Forces, Royal Brunei Police Force and various government departments, as well as foreign envoys and defence attachés from diplomatic missions, representatives from the overseas Chinese community and Chinese institutions in Brunei.

 

In his speech at the reception, Senior Colonel Cheng presented the brilliant achievements of the PLA during the past 88 years, and the vital role it played in national development. Senior Colonel Cheng emphasized that China pursues a defense policy that is defensive in nature and had always been committed to developing military ties and defense diplomacy with other nations. He also pointed out this year marked the 70th anniversary of the end of the World’s Anti-Fascist War and the victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression. China will join other countries across the world in commemorating this unforgettable episode of history, to make sure that war will not recur and peace will be everlasting. Speaking of the China-Brunei military relationships, Senior Colonel Cheng elaborated on great strides in high-level visits, professional exchanges and training cooperation during the past year. He hoped the PLA and RBAF would make concerted effort to inject new impetus into the in-depth development of bilateral relations.

The guests lauded the PLA’s accomplishments in the past 88 years, spoke highly of the PLA’s contribution to regional and international peace and stability. They also expressed their best wishes for further development of state-to-state, military-to-military friendship between China and Brunei Darussalam.

The reception lasted more than two hours in a warm and friendly atmosphere,during which a short documentary entitled The PLA of Today was played.
