Your Honorable Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Setia Dato Seri Setia Awang Hj Abdul Rahman bin Hj Ibrahim, Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Second Minister of Finance, and Datin Hajah Sapiah binti Haji Sabtu,

Pengiran Pengiran, Pehin Pehin, Dato Dato, Datin Datin,

Your Excellencies, Ambassadors and High Commissioners,

Dear Compatriots, Distinguished Guests,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Good evening!

It is my great honor and pleasure to welcome you all to this reception celebrating the 68th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. I’d like to extend my gratitude especially to Your Honorable Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Setia Dato Seri Setia Awang Hj Abdul Rahman and Datin Hajia Sapiah, for gracing tonight’s event.

2017 is an extraordinary year for China.

On October 18th, the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China will convene in Beijing. As a momentous event in China’s state politics this year, the Congress has special significance at a time when the country is undergoing the decisive stage in finishing building a moderately prosperous society in all respects as well as the crucial period of developing socialism with Chinese characteristics. It will open a new chapter for China's development.

On September 4th, the Leaders of Brazil, Russia, India, South Africa and China met in Xiamen at the 9th BRICS Summit and adopted the BRICS Leaders Xiamen Declaration. The five countries agreed to energize the practical cooperation to boost development of BRICS countries and strive towards broad partnerships with emerging markets and developing countries, including through BRICS Plus cooperation.

On July 1st, on the occasion of the 20th Anniversary of Hong Kong’s return to the motherland, President Xi Jinping attended the celebration in Hong Kong as well as the Inaugural Ceremony of the Fifth Term Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. With the strong support of the central government of China, Hong Kong has maintained prosperity and stability, with the key economic and social indicators among the best in the world. The practice of “One country, Two systems” in Hong Kong achieved success recognized by all.

In May, China hosted the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation. Distinguished guests representing over 100 countries gathered in Beijing and engaged in full exchange of views on pursuing the Belt and Road Initiative and reached important consensus. Honorable Pehin Lim Jock Seng, Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Second Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Honorable Pehin Yasmin, Minister of Energy and Industry at the Prime Minister’s Office of Brunei Darussalam, attended this great event. The core of the Belt and Road Initiative is to boost the construction of infrastructure and interconnection, coordinate the policies and integrate the development strategies, deepen practical cooperation and promote coordinated development among the relevant countries to achieve common prosperity.

The People’s Republic of China has gone through 68 eventful years. It has gained rapid economic and social development since the reform and opening up in late 1970s. In the past 10 years, China has become the world’s second largest economy with its economic aggregate grown by 239%. The living standard of over 1.3 billion people has significantly improved. In the first half of this year, the economy of China grew by 6.9%, and 7.35 million urban jobs were created. China continues to be an important engine for regional and global economic growth.

2017 is an extraordinary year for ASEAN.

Founded 50 years ago, ASEAN has been a success story. Over the past 50 years, ASEAN has promoted regional stability and prosperity through persistent dialogue and cooperation, setting an example of win-win cooperation among regional countries.

China regards ASEAN as a priority in its neighborhood diplomacy and is committed to the development of Strategic Partnership for Peace and Prosperity with ASEAN. For eight consecutive years, China has been ASEAN’s largest trading partner, while ASEAN ranked as China’s third largest trading partner for six years in a row. Our trade volume topped US$ 452.2 billion in 2016, almost 56 times larger than that of 1991. Two-way investment in aggregate grew over 355 times bigger, from US$ 500 million in 1991 to US$ 177.9 billion in 2016. China will continue to promote mutually beneficial cooperation with ASEAN for the benefits of the Chinese people and the people of ASEAN countries.

The year 2017 is particularly extraordinary for Brunei Darussalam.

In a few days, the Bruneian people will happily witness and enjoy the historic moment of the Golden Jubilee of His Majesty’s accession to the throne. Over the past five decades, Brunei Darussalam has undergone great transformation. With the outstanding leadership of His Majesty, Brunei has achieved independence and development, and its people obtained happiness and well-being. In today’s Abode of Peace, the nation is enjoying prosperity with social harmony and stability, and the people are leading a happy and peaceful life. While realizing modernization, Brunei has been able to maintain its distinguished cultural tradition, making itself a “Shangrila”. Now Brunei has entered a new stage of economic diversification. Under the wise and visionary leadership of His Majesty, and with vigorous efforts of the people, Brunei will make continuous progress in its national development and achieve "Wawasan 2035" successfully.

The friendship between China and Brunei is very old and also full of new energy. Brunei is the Country of Honour for this year’s China-ASEAN Expo. Earlier this month, His Majesty graced the CAEXPO in Nanning and paid a state visit to China. During the visit, the leaders of our two countries reached important consensus on furthering our Strategic Cooperative Relationship, and witnessed the signing of a few cooperation documents. I am convinced that, with the care of our leaders and the joint efforts of our two peoples, the cooperation between China and Brunei will achieve more outstanding results.

Ladies and gentlemen,

My dear Compatriots,

The National Day of China falls on Sunday and the Mid-Autumn Festival is following. There is an old saying in China, “At a time of festival, one misses his family more than ever”. I wish to take this opportunity to extend my warmest greetings to all Chinese citizens in Brunei, and express my high respect and sincere gratitude to all Bruneian friends committed to China- Brunei friendship.

Before I conclude, please allow me to take this opportunity to wish His Majesty good health and every success.

May Brunei Darussalam enjoy continued prosperity and its people well-being!

May the relationship between China and Brunei reach a new high!

And I wish all of you good health and great success!

Thank you!
