September 29th, 2018

Yang Jian

Your Honorable Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suhaimi bin Haji Gafar, Minister of

Development, and Pengiran Datin Hajah Juraidah,

Pengiran Pengiran, Pehin Pehin, Dato Dato, Datin Datin,

Your Excellencies, Ambassadors and High Commissioners,

Dear Compatriots, Distinguished Guests,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Good evening!

On behalf of the Chinese Embassy in Brunei, I welcome you all to this reception celebrating the 69th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and extend my greetings to my Chinese compatriots in Brunei. I’d like to express my gratitude especially to Your Honorable Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suhaimi bin Haji Gafar, Minister of Development, and Pengiran Datin Hajah Juraidah (binti Pengiran Haji Hidup), for gracing tonight’s event.

2018 is an important year in the history of the People’s Republic of China. Thanks to the initiative of Mr. Deng Xiaoping, China started to pursue the policy of reform and opening-up 40 years ago. Over the last four decades, China has undergone tremendous transformation. Today, China has grown into the world’s second largest economy, the largest industrial producer, the largest trader of goods, and the holder of the largest foreign exchange reserves. The Chinese people have emerged from a life of shortages and poverty and are now enjoying abundant supply and a moderately prosperous life. According to current UN standards, more than 700 million Chinese people have been lifted out of poverty, accounting for more than 70% of the global total over the same period. Contributing over 30% of global growth in recent years, China’s development has not only profoundly changed the country but also greatly influenced the whole world.

Since the beginning of this year, China is confronted with new challenges in its economic development. The whole world is watching where China will go for the next step. China will continue to deepen reform and expand opening-up at its own pace. As we mark the 40th anniversary of reform and opening-up this year, we have introduced a host of major steps to deepen reform, expand opening-up and advance innovation, aiming to promote both China’s own development and global growth.

In the first half of this year, China’s GDP grew by 6.8% with 7.52 million new jobs created. From January to June, the total amount of import and export was 2.21 trillion US dollars with an increase of 16.0%. The export was 1.17 trillion US dollars with an increase of 12.8%, while the import was 1.03 trillion US dollars, up by 19.9%. The trade surplus was 139.65 billion US dollars, narrowing down by 21.6%. From January to August, 41,331 foreign invested enterprises were newly established in China with a year-on-year increase of 102.7%. The actual use of foreign capital was 86.5 billion US dollars, up by 6.1% year-on-year. As we see now, China will achieve this year’s growth target in a steady manner.

2018 marks the 5th anniversary of the Belt and Road Initiative which was put forward by Chinese President Xi Jinping. By far, over 130 countries and international organizations have signed cooperation documents on the BRI with China. China’s trade with BRI participating countries has reached 5 trillion US dollars in cumulative terms, and direct investment in these countries over 60 billion US dollars, creating more than 200,000 local jobs. At present, China and Singapore are cooperating to build a Southern Transport Corridor to promote trade flows between the western part of China and Southeast Asian Countries. And this corridor will shorten the transportation time between Southeast Asia and Europe.

This year also marks the 15th anniversary of the China-ASEAN Strategic Partnership. Over the past 15 years, “ASEAN plus China” stands out as the most successful and vibrant pair of cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region. Last year, the trade volume between China and ASEAN was 514.82 billion US dollars, 6.6 times as much as that in 2003. China has remained the largest trade partner of ASEAN for the ninth year in a row, and ASEAN has remained China’s third largest trade partner for the seventh year in a row. From January to May 2018, China-ASEAN trade volume reached 232.64 billion US dollars, up by 18.9% year-on-year. Mutual investment over the past 15 years totaled more than 200 billion US dollars, and more than 4,000 enterprises were established through direct investment in ASEAN countries by China, creating over 300,000 jobs for local people.

As the global village is getting smaller, China and the world are getting closer. China will continue to hold high the banner of peace, development, cooperation and mutual benefit. In June this year, China held the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit in Qingdao. Earlier this month, China hosted the 2018 Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation. In forthcoming November, we will host the first China International Import Expo in Shanghai. This Expo will be held annually and we warmly welcome Bruneian entrepreneurs to attend.

The strategic cooperative relationship between China and Brunei is going on very well. His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam paid a successful state visit to China last year. The two heads of state reached important consensus on furthering China-Brunei relations in the new era. The growing exchanges and cooperation in various fields have brought benefits to both countries. China’s enterprises in Brunei will create more and more jobs for locals. Last year, more than 52,000 tourists from China visited Brunei and China has emerged as the largest tourism market for Brunei. It is my firm belief that the cooperation between China and Brunei will make greater progress in future.

Before I conclude, please allow me to take this opportunity to wish His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam good health and every success. May Brunei Darussalam enjoy continued prosperity and its people well-being!

Thank you.
