Winners and judges of the logo design competition,

Distinguished guests, friends from media,

Ladies and gentlemen, good afternoon.

It is my great pleasure to attend the awards ceremony of the Logo Design Competition for the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Brunei. This competition was jointly launched last September by the Chinese Embassy in Brunei, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports of Brunei. Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Bruneian Minister of Foreign Affairs II Dato Erywan jointly unveiled the winning logo design during H.E. Mr. Wang Yi’s visit to Brunei January this year, officially launching the 30th anniversary celebrations. Here, I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports of Brunei for co-hosting this competition and arrangements for today’s awards ceremony, to the judges and participants for your support and enthusiasm for the friendship between China and Brunei, and my cordial congratulations to the winners. The designs are full of energy, passion and imagination. The Embassy is very pleased to provide the prizes for the winners.

China and Brunei enjoy a long history of friendly exchanges and a good relationship that dates back to as early as 2000 years ago when the Maritime Silk Road brought our two peoples together. Jalan Ong Sum Ping in Bandar Seri Begawan and the Tomb of the King of Boni in Nanjing, China, bear witness to the long history of friendly interactions between our two countries. On September 30, 1991, our two countries officially established diplomatic relations, heralding a new chapter of bilateral friendship.

In the past 30 years, China-Brunei relations have been built upon achievements and have been forging ahead. During President Xi Jinping's visit to Brunei in 2018, the bilateral relations were upgraded to Strategic Cooperative Partnership. His Majesty has visited China for 12 times. Heads of state of both countries have charted the development course for bilateral relations from a strategic perspective. Her Royal Highness Princess Hajah Masna is awarded as the "Envoy of Friendship of the Chinese People". Owing to the joint efforts of the two countries, the China-Brunei relations has become a good example of relations between countries of different sizes based on equality and mutual benefit.

The past 30 years have witnessed deepening cooperation and closer ties between the two countries. The two sides signed the MOU on the Belt and Road Cooperation and the Cooperation Plan. Bilateral economic and trade volume increased from US $719 million in 2016 to US $1.91 billion in 2020. In particular, bilateral cooperation grew against all the odds in 2020, with trade volume up by 72.5%, ranking first among ASEAN countries. China’s investment in Brunei covers a multitude of areas, which have not only contributed to the oil and gas downstream industries, improve port operation efficiency, and increase local employment, but also contributed to Brunei’s efforts in achieving economic diversification, digital Brunei, and healthy Brunei.

Over the past 30 years, we have gone through thick and thin together and helped each other. Since the outbreak of COVID-19, the two countries have shown sympathy and support to each other, and carried out effective cooperation in epidemic responses. When most countries were faced with severe vaccine shortages, China donated vaccines to Brunei despite its own strong domestic demand, which fully reflects the solidarity and profound friendship between China and Brunei in sharing weal and woe.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China and the first year of the 14th Five-Year Plan and the Long-Range Objectives Through the Year 2035. This year also marks the 30th anniversary of China-ASEAN dialogue relations. As Brunei assumes the rotating chairmanship of ASEAN, China-Brunei relations stand at a new historical starting point. Taking the opportunity of the "Double 30" celebrations, we shall promote the synergies between China’s Long-Range Objectives Through the Year 2035 and Wawasan Brunei 2035, develop high-quality Belt and Road cooperation. China will work with Brunei to strengthen cooperation in promoting economic recovery and maintaining regional peace, stability and development, in order to scale our Strategic Cooperative Partnership and China-ASEAN cooperation to new heights.

I firmly believe that with the joint efforts of the governments and peoples of our two countries, China-Brunei relations will be ever more solid, stronger and closer.

I thank you.
