On September 14, 2016, Foreign Minister Wang Yi met in Beijing with visiting Minister at Prime Minister's Office and Second Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Pehin Dato Lim Jock Seng and Minister of Energy and Industry at the Prime Minister's Office Dato Seri Mohammad Yasmin of Brunei.

Wang Yi said that since China and Brunei established diplomatic relationship 25 years ago, bilateral relations have made considerable progress. The Chinese side always regards Brunei as a trustworthy and sincere friend and cooperation partner in this region. Both sides should intensify high-level exchanges, deepen political mutual trust and elevate China-Brunei strategic cooperative relationship to another new stage. China is willing to promote the docking between the major initiative of the "Belt and Road" and the "Wawasan 2035" development strategy of Brunei, so as to inject new impetus into China-Brunei practical cooperation. China also actively supports Brunei to implement a diversified economic development strategy, boost sustainable economic growth and facilitate people's well-being.

Wang Yi expressed that China highly appreciates the objective and impartial position upheld by Brunei on the South China Sea issue, its adherence to the "dual-track approach" as well as its important role in safeguarding peace and stability in the South China Sea and the whole region.

Pehin Dato Lim Jock Seng and Dato Seri Mohammad Yasmin said that Brunei and China enjoy generations of friendship. Attaching great importance to developing relations with China, Brunei is willing to deepen practical cooperation with China in areas such as energy, infrastructure and small and medium-sized enterprises as well as strengthen non-governmental exchanges and cooperation in education, culture and others fields. It is hoped that China actively supports Brunei in its diversified economic strategy and its capability improvement in economic self-development. The Bruneian side stands ready to join efforts with China to implement the important consensus on ASEAN-China cooperation, safeguarding peace and stability in the South China Sea and other topics reached during the series of Leaders' Meetings on East Asia Cooperation.

Both sides also exchanged views on international and regional topics of common interest.
